What is Coeliac Disease and How Can I Treat It?

28th June 2010

Coeliac Disease (pronounced seel-ee-ak)is a chronic digestive disorder that is caused by a hereditary intolerance to gluten.

Gluten is a component of wheat, rye, barley, and to a lesser extent, oats.  When a person with coeliac disease consumes gluten, damage to the lining of the small intestine occurs, and as a result the body’s ability to absorb vital nutrients is impaired.

How do I know is I have a Gluten Intolerance or Coeliac Disease?

The first signs are usually diarrhea, weight loss and nutritional deficiencies. Other symptoms include nausea, swelling of the abdomen, large and foul smelling stools that float as well as fatigue and irritability.

How Can I Treat Coeliac Disease?

Today there are many alternatives in the dietary sense for people who must avoid gluten, and we at Health, Herbs and Healing stock a great range of products that are palatable and popular. We also provide naturopathic consultations.

Why not come in and browse through the store and speak with Julie, the naturopath.
